Express Entry: Back-to-Back CEC and PNP Draws

Less than 24 hours after their third Express Entry draw of the year, Canada held another round of invitations for 4,626 candidates in the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) program.

On January 21, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada sent out invitations to apply to CEC candidates through the Express Entry system. This is the second draw this year to target CEC specifically, and the fourth draw overall.

The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score for this draw was 454 points, seven points lower than the previous CEC-specific draw.

The federal Express Entry system was developed to manage Canada’s economic-class immigration candidates. Through the system, aspiring immigrants may choose to apply for one of the following economic-class migration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

Applicants who have submitted their profile into the Express Entry system are then given a ranked score based on a number of human capital factors, such as age, education, work experience, language skills, and more. This is the basis of the CRS score.

According to the latest Immigration Levels Plan, the IRCC intends to send out at least 110,000 Express Entry invitations this 2021. Last year, Canada sent out a total of 108,350 invitations to apply (ITAs), setting the record for the highest number of ITAs released in a year.

It is highly likely that Canada was able to send out a high number of ITAs due to their strategy of inviting candidates from specific programs at the start of the pandemic. As 2020 concluded, however, they were able to return to all-program draws.

These first four draws of 2021 are a sure sign of the return to targeted Express Entry draws.

As of this latest draw, Canada has invited 10,000 Express Entry candidates to apply for permanent residency.
