Debunking Tourist Visa Myths

Over the years, we’ve received a lot of inquiries for a tourist visa. But not all inquiries are for travel and leisure.

Let’s debunk some of the myths about a Tourist Visa.

What is a Tourist Visa for?

By definition, a tourist visa is an official document or passport stamp that authorizes a person to enter a foreign country for leisure and tourism. Once your trip is over, you are expected to exit and return to your home country before the expiration of your visa.

Depending on the country, Tourist Visas can also be referred to as Travel Visas or Visitor Visas.

How long is the Validity of a Tourist Visa?

The
Validity and Duration of Stay of a Tourist Visa depends on the country you are applying for.

In the United States, for instance, Tourist Visas can have a validity of 10 years. However, the duration in which you can stay in the country is only 180 days.

The common durations of stay are 3 months and 6 months. However, there are select countries which allow stays of up to 12 months.

Can I Work while on a Tourist Visa?

Because a Tourist Visa is for travel and leisure, it usually contains a No-Work clause. This means that you are not allowed to find work while on a Visit Visa.

What Happens if I Work while I’m on a Tourist Visa?

If you work abroad illegally, your visa will be revoked. This means that it will no longer be valid and you will be out of status. It’s important to remember that foreign nationals without a valid status are subject to deportation.

On top of being deported, it is also possible to be charged with immigration fraud. When you applied for a Tourist Visa, it is implied that you are visiting the country for leisure and not work.

If you are charged with fraud, it could negatively affect all of your future visa applications – not just to the country that charged you, but to other countries as well.

What Other Options are Available if I want to Work Abroad?

If it is your intention to work abroad, do not apply for a Tourist Visa. Instead, look into Permanent Residence and Temporary Residence Visas.

Permanent Residence Visas

Permanent Residence Visas or Immigrant Visas are best suited for skilled professionals who would like to live in a foreign country long-term. Not only does it allow you to work in the country, but you will also be able to receive government benefits such as free healthcare, free education for children under 18, old age benefits, and the likes.

Permanent Residence Visas will also give you an opportunity to become a citizen of that country, given that you meet the eligibility requirements.

Other Temporary Residence Visas

Tewchnically, a Tourist Visa is a Temporary Residence Visa. However, there are other types of Temporary Residence Visas, such as Work visas and Student visas that do not restrict you from finding employment abroad.

Work Visa

A Work Visa will allow you to enter a foreign country given that you already have an employer willing to sponsor you. However, as this is classified as a Temporary Residence Visa, you will be expected to exit the country at the end of your contract. You will also not be able to receive any government benefits, as opposed to a Permanent Residence Visa.

Student Visa

A Student Visa will allow you to enter a foreign country to study and work. It is becoming a popular choice for those who want to further their education, career, and income potential. After graduation, many international students easily get absorbed into the workforce. They then gain eligibility points which allows them the pursue Permanent Residence later on.

There are many options available for you if you aim to live and work in a foreign country, but a tourist visa is not one of them. Do your research before diving into something that could harm your future plans.
