International Student Destinations and their Dependent Policies:
CANADA
Study Level Requirements:
- Must be in a Master’s of PhD program
- Minimum program duration typically requires at least 6 months of study
Dependent Provisions:
Spouse/Common-Law Partner
- Can apply for an open work permit
- Full work authorization in Canada
- No specific job restrictions
Dependent Children
- Under 22 years old
- Can study in Canadian schools
- No additional study permit is required if accompanying the parent
Also, starting January 1, 2024, international students must prove they have CAD $20,635 (increased from previous amounts) to be eligible to bring dependents.
AUSTRALIA
Study Level Requirements:
- Enrolled in registered Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD course
- Minimum course duration of 12 months
- Registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS)

- Can work full-time
- Eligible for work visa concurrent with student’s visa

- Require separate student visa if over 18 and studying
