Updates to the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot
At a recent press conference, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced an expansion to the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP).
The expansion will include the following measures:
- Expansion of the geographic boundaries;
- Expansion of job offers that will be available to candidates with specific job backgrounds;
- Extension of time that will allow communities to participate in the pilot program until August 2024;
- Reducing the required settlement funds of qualified candidates.
In addition to the above measures, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will include measures specifically for Francophone immigrants who would like to settle in rural Canadian communities outside of Quebec.
Participating Communities
11 Canadian communities are participating in the RNIP. These include:
- North Bay, Ontario
- Sudbury, Ontario
- Timmins, Ontario
- Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
- Thunder Bay, Ontario
- Brandon, Manitoba
- Altona/Rhineland, Manitoba
- Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
- Claresholm, Alberta
- Vernon, British Columbia
- West Kootenay (Trail, Castlegar, Rossland, Nelson), British Columbia
Each community in the RNIP can invite up to 125 candidates annually.
As of the end of June, IRCC reported that a total of 1,130 newcomers have arrived in the country via the RNIP.
What is the Purpose of the RNIP?
Because the majority of immigrants who arrive in Canada settle in the large urban centers, the rural areas do not enjoy the benefits of immigration.
According to Sean Fraser, “Rural and northern communities face unique economic and demographic challenges, and the expansion of RNIP announced today makes it that much easier for communities to fill their critical labor market needs. They also expand community boundaries so that employers in remote areas can access the program, helping to support economic development and growth in smaller communities across the country.”
The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) was created because of the success of the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP).
