Now that we have finally entered the new year, let’s look at two of the most noteworthy highlights of Canadian immigration last year.

Immigrants make up the largest share of the population in over 150 years.

In October, reports stated that immigrants accounted for four-fifths or 80% of the labor force growth between 2016 and 2021. Not only that, but immigrants now hold the largest share of the population since 1921. Today, permanent residents make up 23% of Canada’s population and are estimated to grow further between 29% – 34% by 2041.

Provincial Nominee Programs are on the rise.

Express Entry has been the main pathway to permanent residency in Canada. However, the federal system is now stepping aside to give way to more Provincial Nominee Program applicants. According to data released in the latest Immigration Levels Plan report, more allocations will be given to PNP applicants. From 83,500 in 2022, provinces will now be able to accept 105,500 applications. This means that 20% of the immigrants to enter Canada this year will come from the nomination programs.

In the latest Immigration Levels Plan by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the country announced the target of 500,000 newcomers in 2025.
