While the federal government is working to include a clearer aid plan for international students affected by the COVID-19 crisis, some international students do qualify for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, and may receive up to 500CAD per week for up to 16 weeks.

The CERB was created largely to support workers affected by the crisis, and is available to those who:

  • Reside in Canada, who are at least 15 years old;
  • Have stopped working because of COVID-19 and have not voluntarily quit their job or are eligible for EI regular or sickness benefits;
  • Had income of at least $5,000 in 2019 or in the 12 months prior to the date of their application; and
  • Are or expect to be without employment or self-employment income for at least 14 consecutive days in the initial four-week period. For subsequent benefit periods, they expect to have no employment or self-employment income.

While the CERB may not benefit all international students, especially those who rely on seasonal work, those who do meet the terms of eligibility may avail of the benefit.

As of last Sunday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged to assist students who were not accounted for in the initial COVID-19 economic response package.
