The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) kicked off the new year by issuing 1,084 invitations to apply for a provincial nomination on January 11.

The OINP issued the invitation to immigration candidates with profiles in the province’s Expression of Interest (EOI) system. All candidates invited were eligible for a provincial nomination through one of three immigration streams under the Employer Job Offer Category.

These three streams are: the Foreign Worker stream, International Student stream, and In-Demand skills stream.

Here’s a breakdown of the invitations for this draw:

  • Employer Job Offer: Foreign Worker stream – 264
  • Employer Job Offer: International Student stream – 762
  • Employer Job Offer: In-Demand Skills stream –  58

Candidates invited through the OINP’s In-Demand Skills stream were required to have work experience in the health, agriculture, and manufacturing industries. Ontario still applied the National Occupation Classification (NOC) system for this draw, as the country has yet to apply the new Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities (TEER) system for skilled worker candidates.

Ontario wants to invite more immigrants

Each year, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) allocates a number of nominations for every province with their own Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).

In 2021, the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) was allocated 8,350 nominations. An additional 250 nominations were later added for temporary foreign workers in intermediate skilled occupations.

Ontario issued nominations well past their designated limit, reaching 8,600 nominations in 2021. For 2022, the province’s immigration minister, Monte McNaughton, is requesting the federal government to double the OINP’s allocated invitations.
