PGWP: Canada Extends Eligibility Period for Online Students

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) continues to be available for international students who complete their post-secondary studies online.

Prior to the pandemic, online study was not normally eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). As COVID persisted, Canada created policies to accommodate international students overseas.

In 2020, Canada announced that for a limited time period,  international students could complete 100% of their studies online abroad and still obtain a PGWP. Initially, this was only meant to last December 31, 2021. With this recent announcement, Canada extended the measure to August 31, 2022.

According to the Canadian government’s website, the rules apply even if a student is completing two study programs, as long as they began or were ongoing during March 2020 and the summer 2022 intake period.

The programs must also be completed at an eligible Designated Learning Institution (DLI), and are required to meet other PGWP conditions as well. Time spent studying outside Canada after August 31, 2022 and any time spent studying before applying for a study permit does not count towards a PGWP.

More About the PGWP

The PGWP allows students who have completed an eligible program from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada to obtain a two to three-year work permit after they have graduated. The duration of the permit is determined by the length of time a student has studied in a DLI.

It is highly sought after by many international students who wish to become permanent residents and take advantage of the job opportunities available to them in Canada, allowing them to gain work experience in the country. Canadian education and work experience can lead to eligibility and additional points in certain immigration pathways that lead to permanent residency.

International students must also meet other eligibility criteria, including needing an approved study permit.
