Canada’s unemployment rate is at an all-time low.
In a recent report by Statistics Canada, the country’s unemployment rate has fallen to 5.2% in April compared to 5.3% in March.
Unemployment for people between the ages of 25 to 54 is at its lowest record since 1976 at 4.3%.
According to the report, immigrants have an unemployment rate of 5.5% in April, lower than the 5.8% recorded in March.
Immigrant statistics fell under three categories;
- immigrants who gained permanent residence in the last five years;
- immigrants who gained permanent residence in the last five to ten years;
- immigrants who gained permanent residence more than 10 years ago.
For immigrants who gained permanent residence in the last five years, the unemployment rate in April was at 7.8%, compared to the 8.4% of the previous month. For those who gained permanent residence in the last five to ten years, unemployment dropped to 5.8% from 6.3%. And for immigrants who gained residence more than 10 years ago, unemployment stood at 4.6% from 4.8%.
Currently, Canada has over 800,000 vacancies available. Because of this, the federal government and provinces are seeking to fill in the vacancies by easing the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program requirements and processing.
Canada is set on welcoming more immigrants in the next few years. According to the Immigration Levels Plan 2022-2024, Canada will invite an average of 430,000 immigrants per year.
The majority of immigrants will be processed via the economic programs under Express Entry. Currently, Express Entry draws for the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC) have been placed on a temporary pause. However, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that draws will resume in July.
The past two years have been challenging for aspiring immigrants. With the borders finally open and Express Entry draws only a few months away from the resumption, Canada is prepared to welcome even more immigrants into the country.
