Family reunification has played a significant role in Canada’s immigration landscape, and the Canadian government recognizes the impact of keeping families together.

Canada has earned a reputation for being a diverse and welcoming nation, making the country a preferred destination for individuals seeking to reunite with their loved ones.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the Canadian government see the importance of family reunification and are committed to facilitating the reunification of families in Canada.

The country’s commitment to family reunification is reflected in its immigration programs, which aim to facilitate the reunification of families by providing various pathways for sponsorship and permanent residency.

Impact of Family Reunification on Canada

Family reunification contributes to the country’s social, economic, and cultural fabric.

Family reunification enhances social cohesion by strengthening family bonds and fostering a sense of belonging within communities.

When families are reunited, individuals feel supported and connected, which leads to greater community engagement, cooperation, and social harmony.

This also brings individuals with diverse cultural backgrounds to Canada, enriching the country’s cultural fabric. Reunited families contribute their unique traditions, languages, and values, adding to the multicultural mosaic of Canada.

It also has a positive impact on the Canadian economy. Reunited family members can contribute to the workforce, bringing their skills, talents, and entrepreneurial spirit. By integrating into the labor market, they contribute to economic growth, innovation, and productivity.

It leads to the growth of the Canadian population through natural increase and immigration. This population growth is essential for sustaining a healthy labor market, supporting economic growth, and maintaining social welfare programs.

Moreover, reunited family members have access to education and training opportunities, leading to the acquisition of new skills and knowledge.

This benefits not only the individuals but also the Canadian workforce, as it contributes to a more skilled and diverse labor pool.

What Are the Benefits of Family Reunification to Immigrants and International Students?

The Canadian government recognizes the benefits of keeping families together, such as providing emotional support, nurturing cultural identity, and fostering social integration.

Emotional and Mental Well-being

Family reunification fosters emotional well-being by providing individuals with the support, love, and care of their loved ones. Being reunited with family members helps to alleviate feelings of loneliness, isolation, and homesickness, promoting mental health and overall happiness.

International students will also have emotional support and a sense of belonging. Being able to reunite with their families in Canada alleviates feelings of homesickness, loneliness, and isolation. The presence of family members offers comfort, encouragement, and a support system during the challenging periods of studying abroad.

Family reunification positively impacts the academic success of international students. When students have their families with them, they experience reduced stress levels and improved mental well-being, allowing them to focus better on their studies.

The emotional support from family members also contributes to their motivation, confidence, and overall academic performance.

Social Integration

When families are reunited, they can support and guide each other in adapting to a new country and culture. Family members already settled in the host country can provide valuable insights, assistance, and encouragement, facilitating the social integration of newcomers.

Family reunification enables international students to maintain a connection with their culture and heritage. When families are reunited, they can celebrate cultural traditions, speak their native language, and share their cultural experiences with each other.

This connection to their cultural roots helps international students maintain their identity while experiencing a new culture in Canada.

Financial Stability

Family reunification can contribute to financial stability for the reunited family. When family members are together, they can pool their resources, share expenses, and support each other financially.

Families can provide financial support to international students since they will be given the opportunity to have temporary work during their stay in the country. This support can help alleviate the financial burden of tuition fees, living expenses, and other educational costs.

IRCC says that by temporarily issuing work permits to the spouses, dependents, and common-law partners of TFWs, some of the stress may be lifted off workers by improving financial stability and making it easier for families to stay together and integrate into their communities.

In addition, Family reunification can influence international students’ post-graduation plans.

Having their families in Canada may motivate students to explore pathways for staying in the country after completing their studies, such as applying for permanent residency or work permits.

Health and Social Support

Reunited families provide a vital social support network, particularly during challenging times such as illness or hardship. Family members can offer care, assistance, and emotional support, reducing the burden on public healthcare systems and social services.

The availability of such support promotes better health outcomes and overall well-being.

Recognizing these advantages, Canada prioritizes family reunification as an essential element in immigration, emphasizing the importance of keeping families together for a more inclusive and prosperous society.

What Does This Mean to Filipino International Students and Their Families?

Filipinos are known for their rigid close-family ties, and family reunification is indeed appealing enough for most Filipinos. After all, Family is among the most significant reasons why a Filipino is willing to go abroad. It is why they strive to have a better life by going to a distant land of opportunities.

Fortunately, Canada’s family reunification advancement allows Filipinos to stay together with their families – the very reason why they would go the extra mile to further their careers.

So, if you are a Filipino and you are thinking about becoming an international student and the only thing that is stopping you is your family, this is the best time for you to do so.

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced on the 26th of May several new measures to help promote and hasten the reunification of families

Such as new and dedicated processing tools for spousal TRV applicants, faster temporary resident visa (TRV) processing times for spousal applicants, new open work permit for spousal and family class applicants, and open work permit extensions for open work permit holders expiring between August 1st and the end of 2023.

These new measures increase the approval rate of family sponsorship applicants and spousal TRV applications for spouses and their children.

Canada made it easier for Filipinos to study in Canada.

Also, in line with Canada’s Immigration levels plans, the country invites students and their families to apply for permanent residency.

This is because the presence of family members can provide a sense of security and stability, making it more likely for international students to pursue career opportunities in Canada.

When students have their families with them, they may be more inclined to consider building their lives and careers in the country. This increases the likelihood of students choosing Canada as their permanent home, contributing to the country’s talent retention and economic growth.

In a nutshell, Filipinos can study in the country while living with their families, and they have a high chance of being able to immigrate to Canada as a family. A perfect opportunity for all Filipinos who wish to improve their lives in a beautiful country.
